The assessment submission
Your final assessment submission is made up of three documents that will shape the assessment interview.

RICS will only proceed with the interview when all the documents presented for final assessment are of suitable quality.

The submissions vary for APC and Senior Professional/Specialist routes.
On this screen you will learn about the submissions for the APC structured training and APC prelim routes.

If you have been approved by your local office for the Senior Professional/Specialist route, go straight to the next screen to learn about the assessment submissions for that route.

1. Introduction and welcome

Now you are going to watch a real assessment interview. The candidate is called Lauren, there is a chairman and two assessors. This is an example of a QS APC route (graduate) final assessment interview. This example can still be used for other routes such as senior professional and specialist routes.

The chairman introduces the panel, asks Lauren if there is any conflict of interest with the assessors and then runs through the structure of the interview. An auditor is also present.

Assessor panels are strictly confidential and only RICS staff know the panels.

A trained auditor may be allocated to a final assessment panel to ensure our standards are maintained and globally consistent, and the auditor will be there to audit the assessors and not the candidate.

2. The presentation

Lauren introduces the topic of her presentation and how she will structure it. She makes eye contact with the panel and smiles. Lauren is using an iPad and handout to present; she is not allowed to use anything bigger than A3 or a power source.

3. Questions on the presentation

Now the panel begins to ask questions about the case study Lauren has presented. Remember there are three levels of questions:

Level 1 – checking the candidate’s understanding of key terms

Level 2 – checking the candidate can apply knowledge to the case study

Level 3 – checking the candidate can use knowledge to advise a client
Play the video to watch a clip of this section and listen for the three levels of questioning.

  • Professional practice
  • Rules of conduct
  • Professional development.

Test your understanding of the interview by answering these questions on the clips you have just watched.
Select true or false for each statement.
Correct, well done! Here are some of the key points to learn about the interview:

  • the auditor is there to monitor the panel not the candidate
  • at the end of the interview, the candidate will have the chance to re-attempt earlier questions
  • it’s a good idea to bring water and tissues to your interview
  • a level 2 question is in the past tense because it asks how you applied your knowledge to your case study
  • assessors take turns to ask questions
  • the assessors aim to get the best out of the candidate not trip them up
